Paul Celan

Paul Celan was born into a German-speaking Jewish family in Czernowitz, Romania, in 1920. In 1948, he settled in Paris, where he lectured at the École Normale, wrote poetry, and earned fame as the translator of William Shakespeare, Osip Mandelstam, Emily Dickinson, and Arthur Rimbaud, among many others.
