Meditation at Snowfall
by Jason Tandon
With open eyes
I follow my breath
for the count of one,
two, the tip of my tongue
rubbing the jagged
edge of broken calculus
between my bottom teeth.
Plum-sized flakes
fall from a thickening sky
and my daughter’s voice
calls from another room,
“Has anyone seen the stapler?”
And we all are thinking
the same thing:
brushing alone
won’t do. The key
is to floss.
